In contrast to building a platform and playbook for other small businesses to be built from scratch, and tackle local, niche markets, they buy the companies that have figured out some durable business model within a small market, optimise the company, and capture the excess cash flow.
There aren't really any (yet)! I would say something like the mental health networks (alma, headway, sondermind) function somewhat like this in that they give providers a brand, insurance contracts, and software to run a practice. By all outward appearances the providers are practices under the network but really they're paying to participate!
